I received four pieces of Green ash from Chris Howell Timber and Landscape Supplies 1.2m x 120 mm x 10mm. This gives me plenty of material to start experiment as much as possible. For first experiment I decided to cut down the width to 60mm just to see how well it bends, unfortunately it didn’t bend very well. There was a lot of splitting around the edges as there was too much tension in the corners and not much support, also I couldn’t twist it sufficiently so the top corners would not lay flat on the wall.
In my next experiment I will make the wood thinner, I think this will help make the wood flexible but i’m unsure. I’ve also started creating another former which will support it better by softening the edges.
