Transparency: Literal and phenomenal

‘In each of us there is another whom we do not know. He speaks to us in dreams and tells us how differently he sees us from the way we see ourselves’ C.G.Jung – Civilization in transition

Thinking through the concept of my study area ‘Maker’ this quote describes the little voice we all have in our heads, our subconscious. There are a variety of positives and negatives about this ‘voice’, sometimes I have many voices discussing and arguing, we all do! It controls every little thing we do, good and bad.

Example of voice dialogue discussing

*Out food shopping*

‘Those cookies look so good, they’re on sale as well!’

*Picks them up*

‘you don’t need them; you have enough junk at home to eat’

‘but I could eat them tonight while I watch a film in bed’

‘Put them back you’re wasting money’

*walks away*

Being a maker, this voice helps me visualize my concepts in my dreams and in the workshop. After I started becoming interested in Lighting, I kept having dreams where I visualized an instillation I designed. In a simple description it’s a seating/play area which looks like big glowing blobs which would be suitable for parks or cities, both of these areas have been criticized of being dangerous places in the dark but I’d love for them to be places where people can be happy, safe and care-free. This voice has encouraged me to research into lighting and think why I want to do this, what type of people with this attract? How will I start creating this? Who can help me with this? It’s also a problem solver, I’d be wondering how I could power these chairs, electricity cables wouldn’t be very safe for children to play around, I could research into Solar panels which could store power through the day, these could be on the ground and be safe ground for children in case they fall? It pushes my thinking ability through curiosity and drives me to research and experiment.
